Heavenly Hostas

John and June Baker hold the National Collection of hostas in the UK numbering some 1200 varieties. Hear how hostas were discovered and how they have been developed over the years. Also, how to avoid slug and snail damage and how best to  use  hostas in the garden to best effect. The talk includes numerous slides of their collection and of different gardens especially in the USA.

Geoff retired as Head Gardener of Mill Court private estate near Alton in 2012 after 35 years. This evening he presents an illustrated talk giving you some ideas of which shrubs you could use in your garden to give structure, shape and texture as well as colour through flowers, stems and foliage. Plus, lots of photographs!

Festive Plants for Wintertime

Cherrill is well known to many of our members and this evening presents a seasonal talk on Festive Plants for Wintertime. Evergreen holly, ivy and mistletoe are rich in myth and folklore and have long been part of our festive traditions, while Christmas trees are a comparatively recent addition. We will hear stories relating to these plants and about festive gifts such as poinsettias, cacti and amaryllis.

The evening will conclude with mulled wine and mince pies to get us ready for the Festive Season
